Living internationally offers extraordinary opportunities for growth, connection, and cultural discovery. Yet for many expatriates, globally mobile families and internationally minded communities, life across borders can also bring unique emotional challenges.

Transitions, language barriers, distance from family, shifting identities and the stress of adapting to new systems and cultures can all impact mental well-being. At the same time, living abroad can foster resilience, adaptability and strong global communities.

For FAWCO members, mental health is closely connected to FAWCO’s mission of supporting the well-being of women and families worldwide. It also aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, which recognizes mental health as an essential component of overall health.

Mental Health and International Living

Research shows that international relocation and expatriate life can affect emotional well-being in both positive and challenging ways. Common stressors include:

  • Social isolation and loneliness
  • Cultural adjustment and “culture shock”
  • Loss of familiar routines and support systems
  • Language barriers
  • Career and identity transitions
  • Caregiver stress and family pressures
  • Uncertainty and global instability

Women living internationally may experience additional pressures related to caregiving, community integration and maintaining social support networks. At the same time, international living can also strengthen resilience, increase cultural empathy and foster meaningful global friendships and support systems.

Why Mental Wellness Matters

Mental health affects every aspect of daily life, including:

  • Physical health
  • Sleep quality
  • Relationships
  • Cognitive function
  • Stress management
  • Community engagement

According to the World Health Organization, depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Chronic stress can also impact cardiovascular health, immune function and overall quality of life. Mental wellness is not simply the absence of illness—it includes emotional resilience, social connection, purpose and the ability to navigate life’s challenges.

Everyday Strategies to Support Mental Wellness

Small daily habits can have a meaningful impact on emotional well-being.

Prioritize social connection
Strong social relationships are one of the most protective factors for mental health. Staying connected to friends, family and community groups can reduce feelings of isolation and improve resilience.

Protect sleep
Sleep and mental health are closely connected. Consistent sleep routines, reduced screen exposure before bed and stress management can improve both mood and cognitive function.

Spend time outdoors
Research consistently shows that time in nature can reduce stress and improve emotional well-being. Even short daily walks can help support mental health.

Move your body
Regular physical activity is associated with lower rates of anxiety and depression. Movement does not need to be intense to be effective—walking, stretching, dancing and gardening all count.

Limit information overload
Constant exposure to stressful news and digital content can increase anxiety. Setting healthy boundaries with media consumption can help maintain emotional balance.

Maintain meaningful routines
International transitions can disrupt familiar structures. Simple routines around meals, movement, social activities and self-care can provide stability and comfort.

Ask for help when needed
Seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Mental health professionals, support groups, friends and community organizations can all play important roles.

A FAWCO Perspective

FAWCO clubs often provide something deeply valuable for emotional well-being: community.

Whether through social activities, volunteer projects, educational programs or informal friendships, international organizations can help reduce isolation and foster meaningful human connection across cultures and countries.

In a rapidly changing world, creating supportive and inclusive communities remains one of the most powerful ways to promote mental wellness.

Mental wellness is an essential part of overall health.

While life across borders can present unique emotional challenges, it can also create opportunities for resilience, connection and personal growth. Through awareness, supportive communities and simple daily habits, FAWCO members can help promote emotional well-being both within their clubs and in their everyday lives.
