Long-time advocate for military and overseas citizens’ voting rights heading up the Federal Voting Assistance Program since July 6, 2009.
The Pentagon appointed Robert H. Carey, a consultant to Pew Charity Trust’s “Make Voting Work” initiative and a Senior Fellow of the National Defense Committee, as the new Director of the Federal Voting Assistance Program.
The new “Presidential Designee” responsible for implementing the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) was an active duty uniformed services voter most of his life. With 23 years of naval service, he has returned to active duty four times since the 9/11 attacks and been awarded four medals for personal valor. He has been Principal of Empire-Capitol Strategies, a consulting business in New York, a policy advisor to the most senior levels of government and corporations, and a Member of the Board of Overseas Vote Foundation.
Bob has worked for a number of years with FAWCO and its partner organizations as a leading proponent of increasing the enfranchisement of UOCAVA voters. One of the speakers at the reception for Overseas Americans Week 2009, Bob has testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Election Assistance Commission regarding military voter disenfranchisement and is regularly consulted on legislation affecting the UOCAVA population.
FAWCO salutes the new Director and wishes him well; his broad experience and deep commitment will be invaluable in all efforts to help military and overseas voters exercise their right to vote.
