Lest we forget: 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, a Woman's Right to Vote

FAWCO celebrates the day women became “persons”

August 18, 2010, marked the 90th anniversary of the final ratification (with Tennessee weighing in) of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, giving women, after years of struggle, the right to vote.

The Washington Post of August 18th reminds us that Tennessee was the thirty-sixth state to ratify, giving the amendment the requisite approval of three-fourths of the states; the amendment passed because 24 year-old legislator Harry Burn changed his vote, at the insistence of his elderly mother.

The amendment reads "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

FAWCO salutes all the women, those well known like Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul and the many less known, who for so many years championed a woman’s right to vote.

FAWCO also reminds all women and men that there is a very important election coming up in November and they need to request their ballot:
