The International Women’s Club of Bogotá is proud to share some exciting news: the City of Bogotá has been selected as a Finalist for this year’s prestigious Earthshot Prize!
The winners will be announced in early November during the climate meetings in Rio de Janeiro, as part of the lead-up to the UN Climate Conference (COP30) in Belém. This is the first time the award ceremony will be held in South America since the Earthshot Prize was launched in 2020 through The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales.
The Earthshot Prize was established to create a global platform to identify, support and scale the most inspiring and impactful solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges, across five key goals:
1) Protect and Restore Nature
2) Clean our Air
3) Revive our Oceans
4) Build a Waste-Free World
5) Fix our Climate
Every year, five winners are selected, one for each Earthshot goal. The City of Bogotá is a finalist in the “Clean Our Air” category for its bold clean air policies, which have reduced air pollution by 24% since 2018 while transforming how eight million residents move and live to build a healthier, greener city.
Some of Bogotá’s major achievements include:
- Launching the first Urban Zone for Clean Air (ZUMA) in Bosa, a municipality located in the southwest of the city
- Building the largest cycle path network in Latin America
- Sustaining the world’s biggest electric bus fleets (1400 buses)
- Creating 3 new cable car lanes and 100 kilometers of low-emission bus routes
- Planting more than 1,000 new trees, establishing 7,000 urban gardens and creating over 20,000 m² of green roofs and vertical gardens
