Target 3.0 - Issue 16 - September 2017
FAWCO Target Program 2016-2019
Education -  Empowering Women and Girls through Knowledge and Skills
"The principal goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done; men and women who are creative, inventive and discoverers, who can be critical and verify, and not accept, everything they are offered."
- Jean Piaget

FAWCO Target Program Education
We're Back!

...and looking forward to a busy fall attending Regional Meetings in Antwerp, Paris and Munich; discussing the launch of Hope Beyond Displacement; and exciting plans for a first-ever site visit to our Target Project!

Yes, you read that right...we are planning a unique travel opportunity for FAWCO and FAUSA members: the chance to meet the beneficiaries of our Target Project, Hope Beyond Displacement, and learn about the important work Collateral Repair Project is doing. We have dates but are still working on details. Here is what we can tell you now:

We will be an intimate group of 21 individuals representing FAWCO, FAUSA, and The FAWCO Foundation Boards and members from as many Regions as possible! It will be a chance to make new friends, experience a new culture and learn. Participants will return to their clubs and regions ready to share their new knowledge and promote the Target Project.

Participants will arrive in Amman, Jordan on April 6, 2018. On April 7, we will begin a 5-day tour through Jordan exploring cultural and historic sites, and visiting initiatives focused on women and girls, followed by a 3-day program at CRP.

Further details will be available in early October though a Special Bulletin announcement and the website... stay tuned!

We are thrilled to introduce the first Target Project update from CRP's Executive Director, Amanda Lane, in our blog, Let's Get Schooled. These quarterly updates will give us insight on how beneficiaries of Hope Beyond Displacement are being impacted; in this issue learn about the launch of HBD and how CRP purchased school supplies with your donations and sent well over 100 girls to school this month!

Keep reading... Discover how FAWCO's Global Teams are supporting awareness raising for our Target Issue: Education, and learn about the "invisible forces that shape our behavior".

Before you dive into the Bulletin, please read Sahar's message about the Matching Grant Program, so you can make your club's donations go further!

Hope you enjoy and learn something new!

Update I - September 2017

Amanda Lane, Executive Director
Collateral Repair Project

Hello FAWCO friends!

As summer lulls to a close, all of us at Collateral Repair Project are taking a short breather after two weeks of very busy Back to School distributions. It's Eid Al Adha holiday, the end of which will find us finishing up the last of our distributions - getting backpacks, school supplies and uniforms to around 1,000 children in total.

And thanks to FAWCO's amazing support, you have enabled many more than 100 girls to attend school this year. We're still running the numbers as we finish up our distributions, but  it's likely that FAWCO has supported 200 girls or more for this school year. Truly, we don't know how to thank you enough.  You have given these girls the gift of education--and they are thrilled. Here's what they and their parents have to say:

Celebrating your contribution to the Target Program!
Human Rights Team

The  Human Rights Team continues to support the  16 Days Campaign , which this year again aligns itself with education with the theme:  "From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All!" .   Because the Campaign theme coincides so closely with the current FAWCO Target Program and Target Project, the team encourages you to hold a fundraiser for Hope Beyond Displacement.  Here is a recap of suggestions they shared in their August Bulletin for participating in this year's Campaign:

Hold a book discussion on a book about refugees; Charge admission; Add a potluck dinner and ask attendees to donate what they would have spent on a dinner out. Here are two books which would be perfect!
  • A Hope More Powerful than the Sea, by Melissa Fleming, Chief Spokesperson for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. The book tells the true story of a 19-year-old Syrian refugee who survives a shipwreck in the Mediterranean, saving a young child in the process.
View Girl Rising, a film featuring nine girls from the developing world who overcome nearly insurmountable odds to achieve their dreams and/or the companion film,   We Will Rise: Michelle Obama's Mission to Educate Girls Around the World.  Check out the Girl Rising website  for resources such as the Girl Rising book, as well as restrictions on screening the films.

Collect backpacks and/or school supplies for a local refugee center.

Education Team

Book Cover_ The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
In June, the  Education Team introduced a wonderful initiative in support of International Literacy Day (September 8th): they announced their inaugural summer global book read, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind  by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. They invited clubs to read over the summer and host a discussion in September to shine a spotlight on literacy. They upped the ante and suggest turning your event into a fundraiser for the Target Project!

Something For You...
Latin for "the invisible things."

Co-hosted by two of NPR's award-winning journalists,  Alix Spiegel and Hanna Rosin , this podcast explores the invisible forces that shape human behavior - things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions.

"We weave incredible human stories with fascinating new psychological and brain science, in the hopes that after listening, you will come to see new possibilities for how to think, behave and live."
