The FAWCO Board is pleased to announce the three Target issue finalists:
Empowering Women Through Education
Maternal Health
Water
The excellence of the proposals made it very difficult for the Target Selection Committee to narrow the issues down to three. We very much appreciate the hard work that went into all the proposals and would like to encourage those members whose proposals were not chosen to continue to educate their fellow FAWCO members about these issues about which they feel so passionate.
The Board would also like to extend a warm thank you to the members of the Target Selection Committee for their professionalism and dedication. It is now up to the FAWCO clubs to choose the Target issue. A ballot has been sent to each club, with one vote per club. Votes are due by Jan 15, 2010.
Congratulations to the three finalists! To learn MORE about the following Target issue finalists please LOGIN to the FAWCO website and click on Target Program under the "Global Issues" pull down menu at the top of the homepage. There you will find all Target issue proposals and presentations. Empowering Women Through Education Education is Empowerment! Education and knowledge is power!!! Education for women is the road to gender equality, enabling women to obtain important skills and knowledge of their rights as women and individuals. Historically, it is well known that countries which have invested in education have benefited in terms of better economic growth and reduced poverty levels. It is often said that educated parents have educated children. By promoting education. this will break a cycle of generation after generation of poor, illiterate people. Let us begin at the beginning and see FAWCO's Target program focus on education generate a multiplier effect and greatly impact all proposed Target themes and UN MDG's.
Improving Maternal Health The Global Health Issues Team believes that FAWCO members should consider improving maternal health for its TARGET Program. Why? Recent studies by the World Bank, WHO, and UNICEF show that of all of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) reducing death of mothers is the ONLY one where significant progress is NOT being made. We are looking for additional members who would like to work on this issue. If you are interested please contact the chairs of the Health Issues Team Sylvia Behrmann at or Regina Weber at
Water
Every 15 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease. Globally, women and girls spend an average of three hours each day collecting water, leaving little time for a "non-essential" such as school. 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies, approximately one in eight people. Without food a person can live for weeks, but without water you can expect to live only a few days.
Water problems affect half of humanity! The Environment Team feels the Target Program should focus on increasing the supply of safe and secure water globally.
REMEMBER: Deadline for clubs to VOTE for their FAVORITE TARGET ISSUE: January 15
