UN Commission on the Status of Women 2016 (CSW63)

CSW63 and the NGO Forum will be held at the UN in New York from March 11 to 22, 2019. If you're interested in global women's rights, join the FAWCO delegation. You do not have to attend both weeks of CSW, so you can do both -- experience CSW and go to the FAWCO Biennial Conference! Registration begins soon, so mark your calendars and watch for more information.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Inspired by the UN’s #Act4SDGs awareness campaign, UN Rep Tammy Sas-Mayaux organized a series of Facebook posts to educate and motivate action on all 17 SDGs. On September 25 we will celebrate three years since all 193 UN Member States adopted the SDGs as the roadmap to a better future for ALL. The SDGs aim to end extreme poverty, fight injustice and inequality, and conquer climate change by 2030. To learn more, visit SDGaction and globalgoalsUN on Facebook.

This UN SDGs video explains how working together works!
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

On December 10, 1948, the UDHR was signed. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was Chair of the UN Human Rights Commission and the driving force behind the charter. In 2008, FAWCO UN Reps Pam Perraud and Paula Daeppen celebrated the UDHR 60th anniversary by dedicating a plaque in honor of Eleanor Roosevelt at the Place des Nations in Geneva.

For the 70th anniversary of the UDHR, we encourage Member Clubs to organize events honoring Eleanor Roosevelt, and calling attention to the fact that women are still waiting to achieve their human rights in many parts of the world. You can find resources on our website, and join the UN's Stand Up 4 Human Rights campaign to promote understanding of the Universal Declaration and reflect on how we can all stand up for human rights.

Advocacy for the Global Compact on Migration
UN Member States and Civil Society advocates like FAWCO are in the final stages of discussions about the Global Compact, which should be adopted in December 2018. FAWCO UN Rep Jane Politi, Vice Chair of the NGO Committee on Migration (NGO CoM) in NY, keeps FAWCO informed and engaged in advocacy to promote the human rights of migrants, especially women and children. The NGO CoM developed a one-page summary of the Global Compact. In June, UN Rep Tara Scott attended the annual NGO Briefings at the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Geneva, and submitted a report
New UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

On September 10, Michelle Bachelet addressed the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) as the new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Previously, Ms. Bachelet served two terms as President of Chile, and was the founding Executive Director of UN Women, where she made engagement with women’s rights activists a top priority. Under her leadership, we look forward to a HRC that is accessible to women’s groups, prepared to take governments to task, and protect human rights defenders.

In her opening statement, Ms. Bachelet said, “Good governance is based on identifying and amending gaps in access to justice, dignity and equality – so that all can live in more respectful and harmonious societies, and enjoy development that is more dynamic and sustainable... Political differences may divide some of the countries in this room. But upholding human rights is in the interest of every State. Your peoples seek a common agenda: rights, sustainable development and peace. We can only progress towards that vision together.”

UN Women Annual Report for 2017-2018

UN Women's recent Annual Report featured some key results achieved in 2017–2018, including progress towards increasing women’s leadership and political participation, enhancing economic empowerment, ending violence against women and girls, engaging women in peace, security and humanitarian actions, and mainstreaming gender equality in national development planning.

In the inspiring words of UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka: "In 2017 we saw an unprecedented upsurge of movements for women’s rights, equality, safety and justice. The tireless work of activists has been central to this global drive, and women all over the world continue to demonstrate the power of many voices speaking as one."
