FAWCO Target Program 2016-2019
Education - Empowering Women and Girls through Knowledge and Skills

"Think about every problem, every challenge, we face.
The solution to each starts with education."
- George H.W. Bush

Looking back on 2018, we have much to celebrate at the Target Program. From awareness raising campaigns like the 3-day site visit to CRP, World Refugee Day events and visits from Amanda Lane to speak about the impact of the Target Project with members; to toppling our Book Stack by thrashing our fundraising goal within the first year and allowing us to raise that goal by nearly $50,000!

FAWCO Women • You Are Amazing!

Here is some of what has been achieved in the first year of Hope Beyond Displacement...

2019 will bring more participants to each of these programs, a newly renovated playground to CRP, program expansion to CRP’s new downtown center and more!. Please read Amanda’s December update in our blog series, Let’s Get Schooled.

We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and enthusiasm as we enter the last months of the Target Program for Education. We look forward to seeing many of you in Edinburgh in March to celebrate! Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and all good things in the New Year.

But before you go further, here are two more bits of information:

A small side note:  CRP has launched their year-end fundraising campaign. Many of you will have received an email announcement or seen FB posts about it. To avoid confusion, we ask that any funds raised for the Target Project please be sent to The FAWCO Foundation. Monies sent to CRP directly will not be counted towards our fundraising goal nor will they support Hope Beyond Displacement. If you have any questions, please email me at target@fawco.org.

The 2019 GEM Report addressing education in relation to migration and displacement was released on November 20th. I myself am still digging through it and will be posting to the FAWCO FB group interesting facts in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can read the report here and watch this video...

Hope you enjoy and learn something new!

This is such a lovely time of the year in Germany.  The Christmas markets are in full swing and although it is dark very early in the evening, the lights in and around the cities make this a cheery and festive time.

And as you prepare for your holiday season, don’t forget that the Backing Women Boutique has the perfect items for last minute stocking-stuffers, Secret Santa or hostess gifts:  practical purse hangers, lovely scented soaps, BW notepads, to name a few. Email me at targetfundraising@fawcofoundation.org for prices and more information.

This is also the perfect season for giving back.  For the person who already has everything, why not make a donation in their honor to Hope Beyond Displacement?  We have FAWCO Foundation Donation Cards in holiday designs.  Click here for more information:   Donation Cards

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!

Holiday greetings from Düsseldorf,

Becca

A Busy Fall Season

Update VI - December 2018
Amanda Lane, Executive Director
Collateral Repair Project

Fall is always a busy time of the year at CRP. Between our Back to School drive and all the new activities starting up at the community center, it has been pretty non stop for all our staff. But we’re buoyed by the fact that this year we’ve been able to make a larger impact than ever. CRP’s Back to School distributions reached a record number of 1800 children, and our programs have had the highest attendance numbers to date--with October attendance alone just under 4000. Without FAWCO’s support we could have never reached either of these milestones, so thank you!

A Check-Up from Education Consultant Beryl Cheal
A CRP Blog
CRP is honored to welcome back Beryl Cheal, our education consultant, this month who is here to check up on us and help us improve our youth programs. With her invaluable 60 years experience working with children, CRP is lucky to able to benefit from her expertise. Beryl visited CRP last fall through a grant from FAWCO and helped us develop our SuperGirls program. Our second class of SuperGirls just graduated and our third class has just begun, so this is the perfect time for Beryl to reassess our program.

Celebrating your contribution to the Target Program!
AAWE Paris • Creates a Teaching Tool for CRP
“Back to School with the Girls” was the theme of the event organized by FAWCO Rep Michelle Parker of AAWE Paris on October 2nd in support of the Target Project. Around 30 members gathered at the home of former AAWE Paris President, Virginia Pilpoul, to learn about Hope Beyond Displacement and have some good old-fashioned fun singing songs together while enjoying Middle Eastern pastries and Moroccan-style mint tea. FAWCO President, Sallie Chaballier, was present and spoke about her trip to Jordan in April where she and a delegation of 22 FAWCO/FAUSA members witnessed first-hand the work being done through the Target Project at the Collateral Repair Project (CRP). After having been “educated” about the impact of FAWCO’s support, AAWE’s contribution to the Target Project was unveiled.

Coloring book cover  • Images of drawings

What was originally conceived as a simple coloring book to be used by social workers on home visits to refugee families evolved into a “teaching tool” for the team at CRP.  The development was a truly collaborative process: the initial concepts were developed by Karam Hayef and Beryl Cheal of CRP; the storyline “Winning” was written by Marie Azen, a friend and colleague of Beryl’s; the artwork was done by Catherine Seris of AAWE Paris. The images of the coloring book reflect the story’s narrative and theme’s of having faith in a better future, respecting diversity, tolerance and acceptance of others, and that good things do happen.

AWC Berlin • Gave Thanks and Gave Back
AWC Berlin celebrated Happy Thanksgiving by raising over €800 for the Target Project with this cute guy!
Pluck the Turkey! each feather is "suggested" 20 Euro pledge/donation.

Heidelberg IWC • Celebrates Advent with a Charity Concert

In the middle of the Heidelberg Old Town at a small music school, Robin Meloy Goldsby performed a touching, funny and heartwarming concert for 30 guests at the Heidelberg International Women’s Club’s Benefit Concert. Robin played beautiful pieces on the piano, a combination of her own composed pieces and classics from her multiple albums, and shared three delightful and relatable stories about her visiting German saunas, performing for Prince Charles, and shopping at Ikea while pregnant.

All proceeds from the tickets, plus 50% of the sales of Robin’s books and albums, combined to an impressive €635 for the night! The Heidelberg IWC, not even a year old, has supported the Target Project all throughout 2018, raising a total of €1,215 through 5 different fundraising events and activities. Well done!

Something For You... two podcasts

By now you know I enjoy listening to podcasts… “The Cut on Tuesdays” is one of my latest discoveries… It “brings you women’s voices on culture, style, sex, politics, and people: It’s everything The Cut can’t stop talking about. Join host Molly Fischer every week for arguments, obsessions, dissections, reflections, confessions, and other deep dives. From New York Magazine and Gimlet Media.”

Recent topics include what is power, parenting (not what kids need, but rather parents’ thoughts/feelings/decisions), pubic hair trends, domestic violence • It is honest and refreshing conversation.
