The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is part of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Its mission is to promote gender equality and the advancement of women. Its charge is to measure progress towards equality and to highlight the challenges, set standards and formulate concrete policies to promote equality and women’s empowerment worldwide.
In 1996, the UN General Assembly expanded the responsibilities of the CSW to include monitoring progress towards the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the 4th World Congress on Women in 1995. Now its role is to promote and bring greater public awareness of the Beijing Declaration as well as to encourage mainstreaming of the gender perspective in all UN activities worldwide.
FAWCO is a member of the NGO Committees on the Status of Women (NGO CSWs) in NY, Geneva and Vienna. FAWCO members and UN Representatives regularly attend the annual CSW in New York.
FAWCO is a signatory on several NGO CSW Statements submitted to the UN Commission on the Status of Women, along with our partner women's NGOs with consultative status to ECOSOC. You can read the Written Statement submitted for CSW60 in 2016 here and the oral statement made at CSW59 in 2015 here.
