Congresswoman Maloney Applauds Election Reform for Overseas Military and Civilian Voters

Provisions of Maloney Bill included in the "Help America Vote Act"

Washington, DC- Late Thursday night, the House of Representatives passed the "Help America Vote Act," landmark election reform legislation which included provisions that Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney had sought to protect overseas military and civilian voters.

The provisions Congresswoman Maloney fought to include in the "Help America Vote Act" will establish state offices that will be responsible for providing information regarding voter registration procedures and absentee ballot procedures to be used by absent uniformed services voters and overseas voters with respect to elections for Federal Office. It will also automatically qualify someone to receive absentee ballots for two consecutive federal general elections once they apply.

"Perhaps up to six million military and civilian Americans live, work, and pay taxes abroad - they deserve to have their votes counted. Passing this legislation today is a huge victory for them, and for all Americans who want their votes to count," said Congresswoman Maloney in a statement today.

The "Help America Vote Act" will require states and localities to meet uniform and nondiscriminatory election technology and administration requirements applicable to Federal elections.
