Founded in 1931, FAWCO is an international network of independent volunteer clubs and associations. There are 75+ member clubs in 40 countries worldwide, with a total membership in excess of 15,000. FAWCO serves as a resource and channel of information among its members, promotes the rights of U.S. citizens overseas; is active as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council; and contributes to the global community through its Task Forces and The FAWCO Foundation, which provides development grants and education awards. FAWCO and The FAWCO Foundation also collaborate on emergency funding for disaster relief.

Commission on the Status of Women: Agreed Conclusions

This year the 57th UN Commttee on the Status of Women (CSW) meeting in New York this month passed a landmark agreement with representatives of some 6000 NGO's who joined forces and spoke in one voice to demand an end to widespread violence against women and girls.  They came up with a comprehensive list of 69 various recommendations that countries should follow to stem the rising tide of physical, sexual and mental violence against women and girls.  For more information about this agreement and the full text, click here.

FAWCO raised nearly $165,000 for Water
Tabitha Open/hand-dug Well
On the occasion of the UN's World Water Day (March 22), FAWCO announces that it has raised nearly $165,000 for water sustainability. FAWCO's Target Water Program, which ended in February 2013, was a tremendous success with participation from 78% of member clubs  and nearly $165,000 raised ($162,590 to be exact with one more club doing a fundraiser in April). About $135,000 went to Tabitha Cambodia Wells for Clean Water while the remainder went to other Water projects. At the Bern conference, Target Program Chair Anne van Oorschot gave an excellent final report and included a thank-you video from Tabitha's founder Janne Ritskes. Thanks to the generosity of our clubs and members, FAWCO has changed the flow for 1541 families in Cambodia.

Clements Youth Scholarship - deadline April 30th

Clements-youthFAWCO is happy to announce that our Platinum Sponsor, Clements Worldwide has once again launched their 5th annual Expat Youth Scholarship- a contest designed exclusively for children who have lived abroad. Clements will award a total of $10,000 in scholarship funds to six expat students. This year, we are asking expatriate youth to reflect on their time abroad and create a video demonstrating how they will use their enriching, cross-cultural experiences to make the world a better place. Scholarship entry and eligibility requirements can be found at expatyouthscholarship.com and on their Facebook page at facebook.com/expatyouth. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, April 30, at 11:59 PM EST.  FAWCO encourages our youths to participate in this wonderful program, and look forward to have another first prize winner soon.

Is your Representative a co-sponsor of HR 597?

On February 8, just before Overseas Americans Week 2013, Representative Carolyn Maloney, longstanding champion of overseas Americans, introduced HR 597, a bill to create a bipartisan federal commission to look at the issues facing Americans overseas, including the military, and make concrete recommendations to Congress for solutions.   Members of the Commission are to include members of organizations that represent United States citizens living in foreign countries.

HR 597 turns a spotlight on the everyday problems of most concern to Americans living abroad.  In the best of all worlds, it would have at least 250 co-sponsors, people who understand the importance of America’s global population.  It does not (yet).  See the list of co-sponsors and, if your Representative is one of them, write to say “thank you!”.  If he or she is not, forward the letter Congresswoman Maloney and her colleague Mike Honda sent to their colleagues in the House, asking for their support and urge him/her to sign on as a co-sponsor.

Click here for more information on HR 597 and here to find the website of your Congressperson.
