Today, June 20, 2016 at the 32nd session of the Human Rights Council (HRC32), after the presentation of thematic reports by the Secretary-General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights was a noteworthy general debate on the promotion and protection of all human rights. As part of the debate, the Council has before it the report of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women on the activities of the United Nations Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women.

Today as part of the Human Rights Council (HRC) Annual Full-Day Discussion on Women, the Human Rights Council held a panel discussion on women’s rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs).  Clearly integrating lessons learned from the Millennium Development Goals of the deprivations of women’s human rights, the 17 new SDGs are strongly grounded in international human rights and puts the imperative of equality and non-discrimination at its heart. The session was interactive and very well attended.

HRC32 Opens With Historic Attendance


This morning I attended the opening of the thirty-second regular session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) and the session was abuzz like never before. This particular opening commemorated the HRC tenth anniversary and for the first time all 193 United Nations Member States were present for the session.  The Palais was exciting!  Through heightened security delegates, NGOs, Palais des Nations staff, press and more filtered into the room to join the celebration. People warmly greeted each other, waved across the room at one another and seemed ready to work for the next three weeks.

Noting that its possible the Unnited Nations will see its first ever women Secretary General, this year’s Women’s Rights Day on 16 June at the 32nd session of the Human Rights Council is a significant chance to demonstrate that, when it comes to gender equality, everyone has a role to play.
